Our team was commissioned to replicate a variety of external door ironmongery, including center door knobs and ornate finger plates, for The Old War Office Hotel, a prestigious project under Raffles. The objective was to recreate the historic charm and intricate detailing of the original ironmongery while ensuring durability and functionality suitable for a luxury hotel setting.
The client requested an authentic replication of the ironmongery that matched the historical significance and architectural integrity of The Old War Office. The pieces needed to reflect the grandeur of the building’s history, emphasizing craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal. To achieve this, we employed a brass casting process complemented by extensive handwork to meticulously refine the intricate details of each component.
The primary challenge lay in accurately replicating the original ironmongery, which featured complex designs and elaborate detailing that had weathered over time. Additionally, the materials and production methods needed to align with the hotel’s luxury standards.
Our process began with an in-depth analysis of the existing door hardware, focusing on measurements and a close examination of the decorative elements. Using this information, we created 3D models of each component to ensure precision in the replication process.
The production method involved brass casting, allowing us to capture the intricate details of the original pieces. However, once the components were cast, substantial handwork was required to achieve the desired finish. Skilled artisans painstakingly polished each piece, refining the details by hand to ensure that the ornate designs were crisp and well-defined. This labour-intensive process included engraving, buffing, and applying an antique patina, which added depth and character while preserving the historical essence of the ironmongery.
Throughout the project, we maintained close collaboration with the design team at Raffles to ensure that the final products met their high standards of quality and design.
